Steering Wheel/Column Rattle

Hi,

To begin with my steering wheel is slightly out of line. When ever I straighten the wheel the car begins to make a rattle/clunking noise and you can feel it in the steering wheel. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks in advance for your help.

Given the multiple symptoms and observations, a worn tie rod end is the most common suspect. That must not be ignored because when it finally separates, that wheel will go wherever it wants to and could send you into the ditch or into oncoming traffic.

Another suspect, especially if you feel a rather solid, metallic clunking in the steering wheel, (as opposed to the more common subdued, softer thumping), is a worn universal joint in the steering shaft under the dash. Either of these can be easily identified during an inspection at a tire and alignment shop. The people there are experts at finding the causes of noises, pulling to one side, crooked steering wheels, and bad tire wear.
