Steering column replacement, I cannot get the steering column out of mounting studs?

Hi,

Wow, this doesn't have many miles to be having this type of issue. There are four nuts that need to be removed, the wiring harness, and the intermediate shaft.

I attached the directions below for replacing the steering column. Take a look through them and let me know if they help. Also, the one step I don't remember is step 1 which indicates removing the instrument panel. Check to make sure nothing is hitting related to the panel assembly. Pic 1 below shows the panel and its attachments. The remaining pics are the removal/replacement procedures.

I'm not sure why this is being removed, but if you plan to reuse this column, make sure to do this.

Before disconnecting the intermediate shaft, place the steering so the wheels are straight. Then, restrict the steering wheel from being able to turn. You don't want the center to be changed because it can damage the clock spring.

Hi Joe, thanks for the quick reply. Column is failing and it has something wrong with the steering rack that 3 different alignment shops can't get it to align correctly. I don't think it was right from the start, but it is now out of warranty. I don't think the top instrument panel is keeping it from dropping down. It is all loose but there is a bottom piece of the dash that goes around the column that I don't see pictured in the photos. It seems to be attached to the dash. I think that may be holding it. I can get the column down enough to clear studs closest to the driver, but the bottom ones won't clear the studs. I have a new column and clock spring.

If the truck only has 6,000 on it and the dealer is unable to help, I would contact customer assistance at a zone office and demand help. That is crazy. Heck, at 6,000, you shouldn't even be halfway through the original tires. If you can and request help because you feel something was made wrong, they usually will help.

On the other hand, can you send me a pic of the part you don't see in the manual pictures I sent? That may help me.

Also, have you removed the intermediate shaft? If so, you should be able to angle the column to come out.

Hi Joe, I got it out earlier today. That piece was around the column and being hard plastic kept it from coming down enough to get out. Now I have to get the bolt that has the head cut off it out that holds the key and ignition mount to the column.

Neither was I. It looks like they snapped it off when they tightened it up on the column. Will have to work on that tomorrow. Thanks for your help, the info and pics reassured me I hadn't missed anything.
