Traction light and yellow brake light are both on. Initial code was for SAS, got a used one installed it but it won't program, keeps saying maybe faulty. Codes attached.

Hello,

The used SAS will need to be coded in to the DSC with a suitable diagnostic tool such as BMW ISTA, Autologic or other device.

Once done you will need to calibrate the SAS

Calibrating the steering angle sensors

- Start the engine (the "Active Steering inactive" Check-Control message appears).
- Turn the steering wheel first as far as it will go anticlockwise and then as far as it will go clockwise.
- Alternatively the vehicle can be driven at about 30 to 40 km/h.
- Turn off the engine and switch off terminal 15.
- Start the engine. The Active Steering and all its functions is now available.

Being a used unit there might be an issue of the contact area being dirty

A good video

Please let us know how you get along

Is there another piece to the puzzle? Isn't there a sensor on the rack that has to synch with the Sas? I tried two different sensors and still says fault and can not calibrate it. Am think something maybe going on with the one on rack.

Hello,

Have you coded in the used sensor to the DSC? This needs to be done before calibration can be carried out

Just to add in here, there is a TSB about this issue. It's a problem with the Body Gateway module shutting down before the coding can be finished. On CAN bus systems with a Gateway, the network runs through the Gateway then out to other modules, this is what stops your reprogramming. It's not the SAS. BMW has an update in their diagnostic equipment for this is what it's saying. So, the Body Gateway Module might need to be updated by them to finish programming other modules, or just the SAS. I can see the two different procedures for setting the steering angle correctly, but the network is shutting down too quickly due to faulty coding of the other module unfortunately.
