Play in the steering is usually caused by worn steering components such as inner or outer tie rods, excessive play in the steering gear or rack and pinion, or a worn universal joint in the steering column. What I suggest is to first safely lift one of the front wheels off the ground at a time. Place your hands at 3 and 9 o'clock and move the tire back and forth to see if there is movement. If you have a helper, have that person watch where the movement is coming from on the steering linkages under the vehicle. If you find it is a ball joint, here are general directions for replacement:

Do this first and let me know what you find. Please keep in mind, any of these components can fail. The result will be a loss of steering, so check them closely.
