about a month ago my passport just all of a sudden stalled out and has not been the same since. when it does start it runs awsome and i can pump the gas and the RPMS go up and down with ease then all of a sudden dies there is no life in it at all. when i try to restart some times is will restart and run for about 5 sec, other times it will not restart at all for a long period of time. The CEL has never came on so I dont have any codes to go off for a repair, plus i had the batterie off for some time to charge it completly full so i am sure the codes are gone by now. i have tried this on warm and cold days and there is no difference.
I have tried everything i can think of-
1 cleaned throttle body with air intake cleaner not carb cleaner
including the EGR, IAC and other part connected
2 checked fuel pressure its good
3 had gaskets replace about 6 months ago when the water pump went out.
time belt replaced too
4 on the last take of gas i had put injector cleaner in with the gas
5 batt is new
6 alt has been rebuilt tested great
7 gounds checked and replaced all around the engine that i could find.

Any one with information please help as i am at a loss and dont want to sink money into sensors that may or may not be bad. My best guess at this point is the IAC or the fuel pressure regulater.

It sounds like a bad fuel pump, even though you checked it. Do me a favor, when it dies and won't restart, check to see if you are getting spark and proper fuel pressure to the engine. If you have both, check to make sure the injectors are getting power.

let me know what you find.

Well i got the new regulater in at lunch time however, did not get a chance to start it because i ripped a hole in the hose that was in front of the regulater and didnt have any time to go get one before going back to work... so tomorrow i will finish the job.

so i got the hose repaired and nothing... the car will not even start now at all. I only installed a new fuel pressure regulater. So does this mean that mu pump is bad?

Are you getting any pressure to the rail?

All pressure areas were checked.

tried to start at lunch today and it started for about 3 sec then died. started again and went for 5 sec. tried a 3rd time and hit the gas once RPM went up and then died.

i am thinkinging that i damaged the IAC or EGR.
First time i cleaned them i used cheap carb cleaner.
i also had no clue and used a metal piece to scrape it.
Second time i cleaned them i used intake cleaner.

Even if they are bad or damaged, I would think you could keep it running with your foot on the gas. Since you have good fuel pressure and good spark to the plugs, the only thing left is a problem with the injectors. Have you checked to make sure they are getting power? Also, if you use starting fluid, can you keep the engine running?

I have not tried starting fluid to keep it running.
also have not checked the injectors.

I will try both this week sometime once it warms up a little. today is a very cold day here in SD. Snow/Wind and all that good stuff!

Let me know what you find. As far as the snow, wind... we get it here in PA too; however, it isn't nearly as bad as you get it. The older I get, the more I hate it. lol

OK new up date....

today at lunch I started it and just kept on the gas pumping the RPMS between 3and 5.. Lots of smoke grayish in color... once it was warmed up and the smoke cleared i decided to try to drive a little and it went great.. i then tried to really give it gas to excell at a faster speed and then when i slammed the brakes it died,... it would not restart on its own so i pum ped the gas while turning the key and poof it started... drove again for a few min then slamed on the braked and died again... pumped the gas again and it started...

so i got it back to where it was parked and let it idle for some time and it idled funny... it would idle fine for 5-7 seconds then spudder a little it did this over and over...

I can't remember if I asked, but have you checked for vacuum leaks? What you described either sounds like a leak or a bad idle air control valve.

Yes, it is responsible for maintaining the engine idle speed.

After all the things i have read on what it could be this one most often pops up.(IAC). i just dont understand how this one part would cause this much trouble especially when i do get it going and keep it going but this part still manages to make it stall out.. Maybe its the name of the part?HMM..

well i am going to order one tday and it should be in tomorrow. i will get it replace and post a reply.
I was hopeing that i was not going to have to put anymore money into this vehcicle and it would just magicly fix itself but it appears that this will not happen. this car has lasted this long with minimal amount of effort and money for repairs so i guess a couple hundred isnt that bad...

On a vehicle with fuel injection, the only thing that goes through the throttle body is air. On newer cars, the throttle plate closes completely. Therefore, the IAC opens the throttle plate to allow enough air to get to the engine so it stays running when your foot is off the gas.

The only thing it does is maintain the idle speed. Also, I hope you're not paying a couple hundred dollars for an IAC. I just looked it up on Auto Zone's website and it is 44.99. Let me know if you are paying a lot more than that. I was thinking it should be under 50.00.

IMG=250ish
water pump
timing belt.
and some otheres... so a couple hundred was just kind of a guess but not a real good one.. and Oriley has it for $52 but a 10% military discount

I hope that others will see this and read it because this is a super huge problem out there with these vehicles and i have seen many many many different ways that people attempt to fix and some work and some dont work.
problems are always about the same
fixes range from---
IAC
IMG
new grounds
alternator
Fuel Pressure Reg.
Fuel pump
Vacuum lines
holes in lines
ignition controll modual
any number of relays
faulty wires
and so on......

i got the IAC and will be putting it in at lunch time so in about 2-3 hours i will post an update..

IAC installed and the idle is better but still stalls out. First start of the day was awosome and smooth then it went way up but stablized and idled fine.

so i put it in gear to more it and went about 20 yard and it stalled out on me.. i noticed that the last couple time it has stalled out the temp/trans light is coming on when it stalls out while moving. so i got it to a level spot after many attempts and stalls. each time it restarted when i pumped the hell out of the gas. once at a level sport i tried to restart sever time and each time it stalled.

back to square one again!

Well now the car will not start 95% of the time and if it does start it will run for about 3sec then dies and will not restart at all.

i think i am almost to a point to where i am out of my league with this repair. I am going to get a new crankshaft position sensor or ignition controll.. not sure what one to get or just get both?

other than that every thing here has been great.. weater has not been too bad unlike the last time we chatted it was -10...

So yesterday i was cleaning the bottom of the engine with degreaser because this thing used to leak like a SOB untill the gasket was replaced. Well i noticed a wiring harness to the transmission was just hanging there as if it had been torn off the mounting spot. The actual harness clip was OK but the wires that were blue and green in this harness were wrapped around each other and exposed the wire inside. So I cleaned up the harness and got the wires apart and tried to start... well no start but I think i solved the reason as to why the Temp/Trans light came on...(I Hope!)....

I also tried to start yesterday and sprayed starter fluid in the throttle body and now she will not start at all!! will not even spudder a little...

Have not had time to test that yet. Yesterday all i really had was about 30mins to clean and attempt to start.. so i really dont have much more information....

But if you have suggestions please throw them at me.. I do not have tools for testing anything(my buddy has them who is a mech.).. If there is anything you want me to try i will give it a shot....

My concern is that you mentioned it won't even try to start now. Something must have happened. Check to see if there is spark to the plugs and the fuel pressure is within the manufacturer's specs. Something is missing, fuel or spark.

problem 1 solved.. the Trans/Temp light that came on was because the harness underneeth the cab closest to the transmission was twisted a little so that a green wire and a blue wire were touching and this made the plastic on the wire wear away and both had exposed wire that crossed.

so i thought YAH! i solved the whole problem... but no it still will not work like its supposed too..WISHFUL THINKING!!!.... however it will now start and idle for a few minutes then die. couple things i noticed was the white smoke from the exaust but that burns off in a matter of seconds. and the radiator hose that has the thermastst was cold to the touch but the one right nest to it was a little warm.

also every time i cleared the computer by disconnecting the battery it starts and runs. this tell me that something is telling the computer to shut it down.

also noticed some smoke coming from the back of the engine on the passengerside. when i smelled it.. it didnt smell like antifreeze or oil or exaust.. so i am not sure what to make of this if anything.

Hi:
I'm still here. I was trying to get ready for Christmas and have been running around. As far as the smoke, it may be from oil or dirt on the engine. As far as the white smoke from the exhaust, chances are it is just condensation. Have you tried placing a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail to see if fuel pressure drops when the engine dies? Also, will it start right back up?

If I don't hear from you today, have a good Christmas.

So after everything i tried.....it ended up being the ICM!!!!
i took it to the shop and it took them about 10mins to tell me that i have power going into the ICM and nothing coming out.

So today i will be ordering an ICM...

One thing the shop did mention too is that this is a starting point so there may be more things wrong that i dont know! I hope that this is not the case!

Have you tried local parts stores? If they are unable to get one, then it may be a dealer part, which is a concern because it may no longer be available. Which would leave getting it off the internet or a salvage yard.
