This has happened about four times in the last four months:
I try to start the car and it is dead. The clock is on but nothing else. The horn may or may not blow faintly. A few minutes later there is power to the radio, the windows and maybe the horn, but when I turn the key nothing. When I turn the key back one position I have flashing lights of the open door indicator.
I call for a jump, it starts, I get home turn it off its dead. I come out hours later it starts.
This has repeated in similar fashion at least four times.
Any idea what this could be?

Follow the smaller battery positive wire to the under-hood fuse box, and be sure that connection is clean and tight. Also, follow the smaller negative wire to the body and be sure that connection is tight and not rusty. Do not overlook loose or dirty battery cable connections. These guides can help us find the problem.

Having some electrical issues with 99 accord.

Problem 1: Could not start the car. When restarting the car after a short time-frame (i.e. quick errands like pumping gasoline, quick trip in and out of store, etc...) or in hot weather the car wouldn't start for a few minutes (after quite a few tries).

Problem 2: The entire climate control panel in the center of the dash lost power.

I replaced the 15 fuses in the fuse box and under the hood, as well as the main relay, today. So far, there've been no issues starting car. However, in the midst of dealing with the climate control panel, discovered another issue...

Problem 3: The metal prong (under the black temp control knob) is insanely hot, as it never has been before. The knob broke months ago and I've been using the metal prong to adjust the a/c and heat. While trying to figure out the cause of the lost power to climate control panel, I removed the knob to try adjusting temp and burned fingers very badly. The metal was extremely hot (like hot oil) and part of the plastic casing around the knob area looks like it's melting.

If anyone has had any of these issues and can shed some light on what the heck is happening to my car, or even better, if you've resolved similar problems, please let me know! Thanks.

There's a short some where within that circuit. The climate control unit is being power by the 7.5 amp fuse no. 13. if there's an actual short it should blow this fuse.See below and remove the driver's multiplex control unit and feel the knob again. In addition check the white and yellow wire for a short to ground that goes to the climate control unit.

Honda Accord 1998 155,000mi, automatic, 4cyl

When letting off the gas pedal, the electrical system shuts off for a brief second. Radio shuts off, meters go to zero, inside lights shut off. It might not even be a second, then everythings back to normal. It would do this like clockwork, accelerate, let off the gas, blink. Oddly enough, turning on the headlights makes the issue disappear. Turn the lights off and its back again.

Humm the most probable cause of the problem is a deffective alternator. Idling with lights on you read about 14 volts.

However you need to check the grounds from the battery to the engine and to the car chassis . Remove and clean them as they may have corrosion behind them.

Recently I found a similiar problem with a defective battery. It was totally dry.

Good luck losone

This is a 98 accord, 173,000 miles, automatic. While riding down the road, has "shut down" - completely dead 3 times in the last 2 weeks. First 2 times it came back on, but the last time we had to stop, and then it restarted. Battery is about 6 months old with some corrosion problems on 1 post.

This could be a crank or cam sensor. It could be a fuel pressure regulator as well. It always has started as you mentioned and that makes it more difficult to diagnose. You mentioned that the first two times it came back on so with an automatic that indicates to me that it never really died but rather stuttered pretty good. It will get worse. I might lean my consideration to the fuel pressure regulator based on the two almost dead but came back experiences.

Was anything done prior to this occurring?

Did you check the dash brightness controller?

The other item related to this problem would be the driver's multiplex control unit.

Occasionally my car will not start. It will have NO electricity, no lights, no dash, nothing. In the next few moments I will open the door and there will be the lights, etc. and it will start right up. I just purchased a new battery because occasionally there would be "cranking" before it would start and had not had a new one in 8 years. What is this an indication of, no electricity at all one moment and all power the next.

Hi melsmail,

If everything including the horn and head lighst fails and suddenly is available, the most likely problem would be bad contacts at the battery terminals.

Clean the battery teriminals, retighten and retest.

I'm living in Thailand and driving a "rebuilt", government inspected and approved 1998 Accord. Sometimes the car doesn't start. I would say this happens about one time out of 20 and it seems to happen most frequently when the car has been used and left sitting for about a half an hour. When it won't start it is a matter of the ignition key being turned and nothing happens. There is no sound and absolutely nothing happens. If we wait for a long period of time it is able to start once again, but we never know how long the wait will take.
This problem has been going on for well over a year. We have had new batteries put in and we have had a new ignition system installed. The connections to the battery have been redone also. Theories about the cause of the problem have been crazy. Some people say the front tires need to be straight and others say it is necessary to have a foot on the brake in order to start the car. A current theory says that, since the car is set up for both natural gas and gasoline fueling, it is necessary to have good amounts of both fuel sources in order to start the car. This would not explain how the car starts after a long wait. Neither does it explain why the car starts when jumper cables are used on the battery. It appears to me that the jumper cables prove that the problem is between the ignition key and the battery. Supposedly a new ignition system and new connections to the battery would solve the problem if it is indeed between the ignition key and the battery. However, the problem continues. It may be that the wires going to the battery have a short, or the new ignition system was not inserted correctly. My guess is that there is some kind of "electrical short" involved and the local mechanics do not how to deal with it.
If you have a solution to this, I will be eternally grateful. I don't know who you are, but I will certainly be glad to reimburse you if you can solve this.

When you say "nothing happens", are you referring to the starter motor or the entire electrical system? If there's no dash lights and the electrical system is dead, a common suspect is to follow the smaller battery positive wire to the under-hood fuse box and be sure that connection is clean and tight. While you're at it, follow the smaller negative battery wire to the body and be sure that one is tight and not rusty.

Engine Performance problem
1995 Honda Accord 6 cyl Automatic

95 Honda Accord V6
Hi, I just had a new/used engine put in my car a week ago. I had been driving my car all day as I was pulling in onto my dirt road I heard something pop and then I start to smell something like a funny burning smell.
When I went back out my gauges (speed and rpm)
started going up and down and then stop working, and the lights inside my car and the headlights went dim.
I pull over turned the car off, turned it back on it did not want to start, but it did.
When it did start I put my foot on the gas it felt like it was going to stall, but never did.
When I drove a little everything kicked back in and the car took off.
What could this be?
Also had put in water pump, battery, 1-o2 sensor, gaskets, and thermostat

This is going to be next to impossible to diagnose without being there to see what is happening, but a good place to start is by checking the generator belt and testing the charging system when the problem acts up. If the belt is not loose or slipping, use a cheap digital voltmeter to measure the voltage between the two battery posts. It must be between 13.75 and 14.75 volts while the engine is running. Low system voltage will confuse the numerous computers on the car and will cause a lot of strange symptoms.

Check your battery connections and charge the battery first before condeming it, if you dont have a charger try to jump start it with another vehicle if possible.

I was driving my car last night when the car started slowing down. It wouldn't accelerate, but the engine stayed running until the car stopped. Then it went dead.

The car will not start back, the engine will not turn over at all. No noise, no clicking. The headlights are full power, battery was just replaced two weeks ago.

Some of the electrical components do not work at all. The automatic seatbelts do not work.

I have never seen anything like this and was wondering if anyone else is familiar with this problem or has an idea where to begin looking to repair this problem.

Hi bebc,

Check the main fuse underhood.
If the dash indicator lights do not come on when ignition switch is turned to "on", check the ignition switch.

Need to use a test light
place clip on the positive side of the battery and check for ground on the engine and car metal
light should light up if not check the ground wire and or run a new one from the battery to engine and car side fender under the hood

if OK
place the clips on ground and check fuses
light should light on both side of the fuse if light only on one side fuse is bad remove and replace

do u have light or horn or any other power that is not related to the ignition switch
and if yes suspect and check ignition switch
electric issues take time and patient
be careful and good luck

Electrical problem
1990 Honda Accord 4 cyl Automatic

Yesterday, i left my lights on, so last night when i tried to start my car, nothing happened. There was no sound as to show that the car was even attempting to crank or start. Hence, i tried to get a jump. Due to my ignorance that the negative post called for the black cable instead of the red, i connected the cable backwards. I bought a new battery and tested it out, nothing happened. I talked to my father and he said it may be the main fuse, i also browsed online to fiind the number to this local honda specialist and he said that the main fuse would also be the problem since there is no sound and no power getting into the car. So, i guess the question i am asking is where is the main fuse located on the 1990 Honda Accord and do you know any other problems that might be the cause.

I'm not sure how honda does it, but most cars have a seperate wire that goes from the positive battery cable to the cars computer. This wire usually consists of what is called a fusible link. The wire may go from 10 gauge down to a smaller gauge (say 12 or 14 gauge, this section will get fried before the computer) then back up to 10 gauge. This wire would need to be replaced if it is indeed the problem. I guess it would also be possible to have a fuse by itself along this wire, it would need to be checked. Also look for a fuse labeled ECM or PCM in the engine compartment fuse block and check it to see if its blown. If you still have the cars owners manual it can be very handy in this situation. Good Luck.

I woke up this morning tried to start the car and it did not so I bought the battery installed and still nothing no lights no radio just nothing. I then fiddled with the connections got the radio and all the lights to start but when I go to start it turns everything off then I have to mess with the connection again for the lights to turn back on

What you have described sounds exactly like there is a bad connection at the battery or a bad main ground at the engine.

First, remove the battery terminals. Since the battery is new, the posts should be clean. Check the battery cables to make sure they are clean. Next, replace the cables and make sure they are TIGHT. Next, follow the ground from the battery. The main cable should run to the engine block. Make sure it is clean and tight too.

Let me know what you find. Also, if it is something different than the battery cables that you played with to get lights, let me know what it was.
