Why does my car jitter when attempting to start it?

Hi,
I'm not sure I understand. When you say it jitters for three seconds, do you mean the starter motor or the engine? If it is the starter motor, have you checked all connections at the battery? Are there any other electrical issues?
If it is the engine, does the check engine light stay on when the engine is running? Also, are there any odd odors or smoke from the exhaust?
