Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

Based on your descriptions, the solenoid on the starter has failed. The solenoid Bendix engages the ring gear on the starter with the car's flywheel. Now, either the ring gear isn't extending to reach the flywheel or the teeth are bad on one or the other.

With that in mind, you need to remove the starter and inspect it. Most parts stores will bench test the starter to determine of the Bendix isn't engaging the ring gear.

Here are the directions for removing the starter. Make sure when you disconnect the wires to it that you mark them to ensure they are put back the same way. The attached pictures correlate with these directions.

Removal

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove the shift cable and bracket. (M/T)
4. Disconnect the starter cable (A) from the B terminal (B) on the solenoid (C), then disconnect the connector (D) from the S terminal (E).
5. Remove the 2 bolts holding the starter, then remove the starter.
6. Installation is the reverse of removal.
7. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery.

Installation is the opposite of removal.

Again, based on your description, it sounds like the Bendix has failed. Have it checked. Make sure that prior to starting to remove the starter you disconnect the battery.

Let me know if you have other questions or need help.

Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can hear the noise? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

It sounds like the battery could be weak not pushing the starter Bendix out. can we go through this guide to confirm the battery condition?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-battery-load-test

Please run down this guide and report back. Also, when the starter was out did you look at the flex-plate teeth? They can be worn causing the noise. I would know for sure if you could load a video in your response.
