Hi:

You need to use an extension to access the inner bolt from above the starter motor a wrench will not work. Here is a guide that shows how to do it and diagrams below to show you how the starter comes out in your car below.

were is the starter located

The starter is mounted where the transmission and engine block come together. I believe it is on the front of the engine facing the grill. It is about level with the top of the oil pan.

I have my neighbor put in a starter. How much does it cost for a brand new starter i never had any problems with the starter before. And how long does it takes to put one in. What is the labor cost these days?

I am not a mechanically inclined person. I need some detailed info or diagrams to help me in replacing the reman. starter I purchased today. Can you help me or lead to a website with proper information?

i would suggest purchasing a repair manual or having a professional do it.

it is located on the engine by the bell housing where the engine and transmission meet each other, it unbolts and pulls out after you unhook the cables.

it acts like and sounds like a bad starter but i installed a new one and it still does the same thing. i checked the flywheel and switched the relay switches around and i still have the same problem

I'm not sure if you've spoken with a tech previously with your issue, but in order for me to help you I'd need a little more detail.

What kind of starter problem are you having? And what kind of noise are you hearing?

Does your car start? And when it does, is there a grinding or high pitched squeal, like metal-on-metal?

I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu. Mechanic replaced the starter. Two hours later, wouldn't start. Told the starter was bad and it fried the ignition switch. They replaced the starter again and the ignition switch. I have had it back for 2 days and it won't start again. Should they be looking for some other problem?

A defective starter can't damage the ignition switch. There is a relay in between them and even that is not likely to get damaged. What they might be looking for depends on how you describe the problem. Unless they hear the symptoms themselves, "doesn't start" can mean lots of different things, just like "I'm in pain" doesn't tell you much.

If the problem is intermittent and hard to duplicate, you can best help in the diagnosis by making as many observations as possible. Turn on the head lights or open the door and watch the dome light. Do they dim just a little, not at all, or go completely off when you try to start the engine? Before you try to start it, does the radio play properly, power windows work, things like that. Do you hear a light click from under the hood when you try to start the engine? How about a single rather loud clunk each time you turn the ignition switch to "crank"?

Keep in mind all of those suggestions pertain to a starter motor that will not crank the engine. If it DOES spin the engine but the engine doesn't run, that is also called a no-start condition but the symptoms are totally different.

If they were working with the starter motor, my guess is it wasn't cranking the engine. Based on the repeat nature of the problem, I'd suspect a problem with one of the battery cables or connections. GM doesn't have a real lot of starter motor trouble, and the chances of the replacement being defective isn't too likely either.

A more common problem is the neutral safety switch. When it doesn't start, try shifting to neutral instead of park, and try it again. If moving it between neutral and park a few times makes it work, it's almost certain that is the problem. They are often intermittent before they fail completely.

Disconnect the battery, remove the wiring to the starter (front of engine), and there are two bolts that hold it on. Remove them and the starter will come off.

hey there! well i ran out of gas while driving, and got towed to a gas station and filled my car back up expecting to be able to drive away. but to my suprise my car would not start. my friend said that it is probably my starter and that i could try to tap on it to see if that will work before i go to replace it. but as myself knowing nothing about engines i dont know if that is true or where even to find my starter. please help

Hello, I have what I believe to be a bad starter-solenoid. Where would I look for instructions on how to check and replace it.

below are steps on how to test starter solenoid..



Ensure that the battery itself is not the cause of the starting problem by visually inspecting the exterior of the battery for cracks or corrosion. If the case is cracked, the battery must be replaced. If the case is not cracked, but corrosion is present around the battery terminals, remove the corrosion with a toothbrush and solution of baking soda and water. The solution need not be of a specific proportion, as the baking soda only acts as a mild abrasive.

Check the battery cable connections. Turn the vehicle's headlights on high beam, then insert the blade of a flathead screwdriver between the battery post and the clamp on the end of the battery cable. Gently twist the screwdriver and observe the headlight beams. If the beams brighten, remove the battery cable from the battery post with a wrench and clean the post and clamp with a battery terminal cleaner, then install and tighten the clamp.

Test the starter solenoid by connecting a jumper cable to the battery side of the solenoid. The solenoid has two large posts and two small posts. A single large post is located on either side of the solenoid. Attach the alligator clip of the jumper cable to the large post on the battery side of the solenoid. Touch the opposite end of the jumper cable to the large post on the other side of the solenoid. If the starter turns the engine normally, the problem likely lies with an ignition override switch, such as a clutch start switch or a neutral safety switch. If the starter produces a buzzing sound, the starter is likely defective. If there is no response at all, the solenoid is defective and must be replaced.

my name is william phillips.i live in rushville,illinois. and i drive a 2005 chevrolet malibu ls 4 door and it has 16821 miles on it.we've had this car for 5 years now. and we bought this car at steve knipmeyer chevrolet in beardstown of nov 2005.i been having trouble with starter this past year and also last saturday morning and also today when it got very cold this morning.could it be the battery or the starter?. we had eyler auto center here in rushville put in a new battery back in september of last year. it is possible that should we get a new car or keep our current car. my e-mail address is [email protected] thank you.

What exactly is it doing? Cranking over and will not start or just won't crank at all/nothing. Could be the battery and connections causing it or starter problem which cost less than a new car. Get it checked out-
