starter problems

i put a new starter on my truck. it started a few times and then it quit starting. and i could not stop the starter drive from striking the flywheel no matter how i shimmed it. could it be the ignition switch on the base of the column.

Did you examine the flywheel? The teeth are good, no cracks on the flywheel/flexplate anywhere? Was it the proper starter? It's hard for me to tell much without being able to look at it.
