I bought a new starter put it in and had no problems for about a month . The bolts loosened and when I went to start it it sounded like it was chewing rocks! And snapped both bolts . I got the broken bolts out and am trying to use similar bolts but I know these are not the originals but they seemed to be working until tonight, I got in to leave and its ssd's sounding like rocks are being ground down. My question is, does the starter need to be flat into the flywheel area or can it be at an angle? My new starter did not come with shims and my old one did not have any. D.c. o I have the starter too far in?

Good morning,

The bolts have to be torqued with a torque wrench when installed.

They are special bolts. You can get them at any parts store. Just ask them for starter bolts for your truck and they will get them for you.

It sounds like you have damaged either the flywheel teeth or the starter nose itself. I would return your starter for warranty replacement and get a replacement. It will only have shims if the rebuilder shaved the nose of the starter itself.

Yes, it has to be flush with the block for proper alignment. That is the only way it will work.

Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 43 N.m (32 lb ft).
