i have inherited this truck and it has sat for couple a years. I got it to my house installed new fuel pump, fuel filter and new EFI relay. it will start but will not stay running. i have checks mass air flow sensor and even jumped b+ to fuel pump in distributor box under hood, but still no luck. changed ECM with one out of another running truck but still same thing. it has twelve volts to injectors but will not run. does the igniter over on driver fender have anything to do with injectors?

Will it stay running if you hold the revs above a fast idle? can you check for any codes? not all codes will set a check light.

I would flush the fuel system out it sounds like you have old gas in there. Have you put a fresh tank in it?

Let me know,

Cheers, Ken

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak or a plugged exhaust system, here are some guides to help us do some checking.

Electrical problem
1994 Toyota Pickup 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 260000 miles

the motor turns over but it wont stay on. the times it does stay on, when i turn any electrical component on (lights or heater) the engime begins to miss fire to the point it turns off. I brushed up and cleaned by ground connection as i was told it could be the problem. I have changed the spark plug wires, cap and rotor,.... my terminals are new.

Load test the alternator if okay, clean out the idle air control valve and EGR valve and test the throttle position sensor and airflow meter to include a fuel pressure check.

My truck will start, but then won't stay running. The fuel pump has been ruled out, possibly the computer? Any other ideas ? Thank you

Electrical problem
1994 Toyota Pickup 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 150000 miles

My toyota truck stalls when the brake is applied. It stalls or bucks sometimes when the turn signal or lights are turned on. I noticed I had a loose connection at the battery terminal on the negative. Playing with the battery terminal can get the engine to start again but the problem persists. The engine runs fine until I do one of the above things. Dosen't seem to me that a bad connection at the terminal could cause this, but I am not an experienced mechanic.

My '94 Toyota pickup just stopped running while I was driving down the road. It did hesitate, cough or sputter -- it just quit. Now it cranks over but will not start.

Do below to determine if its fuel or spark problem

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine at least 3/16 away from ground -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem,Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn key on? If not check fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay if so, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

Engine Performance problem
1994 Toyota Pickup 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 145000 miles

When my 4cyl Toyota Pick up is brought to a stop I must keep my foot on the accelerator or it will stall. It starts right up & may or may not need me to give it more fuel until I move. What components do you recommend checking first?

truck has times when it will keep cutting off and not won't to stay cranked, there is a gas smell and check engine light comes on for a second and goes off. We have put in a new fuel pump and changed gas filters, new exhaust system and tune-it up. Any suggestions of what the problem could be?

Truck will crank then die. Believe the cold start injector is getting it running for a min then the other injectors aren't opening. What inputs will cause the ecu not to open the injectors? O2 sensor, temp sensor, throttle position sensor, oil sensor, mass air flow sensor! Ecu will not give fault code. Replaced fuel pump and fuel pump will run after I let off the ignition from start position to on. Have replaced the air flow sensor with a remanned one from oreilly's.

How long has the truck been sitting without running? due to the bad fuel that ruined your fuel pump the injectors probably have to be cleaned. No code which means it's fuel related.

Well I should have tested the old one before i changed it. The truck was running and there was nothing wrong with the old pump. I just thought that could be what it was and my mom bought a new one for me to help me out before I had a chance to make sure that the old one was bad. Like an idiot I went ahead and put it in and wasted 160$. But the day it broke down. I put gas in it and drove it on the interstate a good ways. Bout a 45 min drive to job interview and drove it back another 45 min to job, worked and on my way home it died. It has been doing the same thing except for one time. After I put the new fuel pump in. About the fourth time trying to crank it ran. I thought that was the fix. I let it run for about 4 or 5 min and then I turned it off. Hasn't ran again. I have tried cranking it a lot. Have reset the computer a few times by disconnecting the bat. Gas is good. New gas. Was a daily driver.

the crank sensor sends the signal to the ECU to activate the fuel pump and the injector pulse, if the injectors are not working then the fuel pump is not working either. If the fuel pump is working in the injectors are not you may possibly have some wiring problem to the injectors or the ECU is bad. you never mention what kind of fuel pressure you had or that you changed the fuel filter? if you have no fuel pressure or injection pulse, spray some Ether in the throttle body and tell me if it tries to start. if it tries to start you have a bad crank sensor.

Think you have pointed us in the right direction. We are starting to focus on the igniter. The crank sensor is in the distributor . And then It goes to the igniter then Ecu. Correct? I have had a lot of firing problems. I have changed coil three times, changed the igniter once, and the condenser or capacitor whatever you call it once. We are gonna check the crank sensor and ignitor. Just wondering why we didn't get a code when running diagnostics. Should we have and how can I check ignitor speed signal to Ecu? Last time I changed it we had a parts truck on hand and just started changing parts till it ran. From what I can remember the igniter is pretty expensive.

the fuel cutoff system is Controlled through input from throttle position sensor, Engine Control Module (ECM) will cut fuel delivery during closed throttle deceleration. if you had a bad throttle positioning sensor it would not allow the injectors to operate properly. The electronic ignition system uses the Engine Control Module (ECM) for determining ignition timing (spark advance). The ECM determines ignition timing (spark advance) based on various input signals. Following input signals may be used: coolant temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, engine RPM, vehicle speed sensor, A/C switch, 4WD operation, airflow meter, knock sensor, vacuum sensor and cranking (starter) signal. Input signals may vary on model application. Integrated (ignition coil on distributor) and remote ignition coil designs are used depending on model.

On 2.4L, a single pick-up coil in the distributor delivers crankshaft position and engine RPM input signal to the ECM. The ECM monitors pick-up coil signal at NE or NE+ terminal. On all other models, crankshaft position and engine RPM input signals are delivered to the ECM by 2 pick-up coils in the distributor. Crankshaft position input signal is delivered to G, G+ or G1 (and G2 on some models) terminal of ECM, and engine RPM input signal is delivered to NE or NE+ terminal of ECM. See Figure .

On all models, ECM uses pick-up coil input signals to switch primary ignition circuit on and off. Primary circuit is turned off when ECM delivers a signal to ignitor on the IGT wire, causing ignition coil to fire the spark plug. After delivering a command to turn off primary circuit on the IGT wire, the ECM monitors IGF circuit to ensure primary switching occurred. See Figure .

We know for sure that the injectors are not getting the ground from Ecm. The 12 v is there. The spark plugs are fire ing because it will run from cold start injector and from starting fluid. What should we do?
