Engine shuts off when transmission is put into gear

If you sit and let it run and warm up, does it still happen? When is the last time the fuel filter was changed. It may be getting enough fuel to start but when it calls for more fuel to go there is not enough. Had something like that happen to a Firebird my wife has. found it was the screen in the gas tank that was getting clogged by the junk from the ethenal they put in . It does have a thing about clogging up the system.
