So I noticed that my car shifts first in second but once I am at 40 mph it does not shift and it revs to 3 but still goes faster. I had an auto store hook up their machine and it is saying that the speed sensor is off. I have no idea. No one will help me if it is the transmission because these vehicles are very hard when dealing with transmission. What to do?

Good morning.

Was there a code set that the parts store got on there scan?

The throttle position sensor controls the shifting command for the transmission and the TCM tells the shift solenoids to work as well.

When was the last time the oil/filter in the transmission was serviced?

Hey VANCE24,

When you jumper the battery did you by chance jump it backwards of a second? If so the computer has been knocked out and needs replacement. If not, check all fuses, here is a guide to help you.

Let me know what you find.

Brought it to a mechanic, couldn't find any bad fuses. He hooked up a scanner and thinks that it may be a transmission control module located inside or around the transmission. Now I have to bring it to a tranny guy. This make sense?

As ken has mentioned if the battery was hooked up reverse polarity even just a battery flash, this can burn out circuits in the pcm and other control modules, the scan should give info on what is at fault, if this mechanic is not sure by all means get a second opinion before doing anything, if you can post any codes set that will help up look a little deeper into this problem.

Hello

P1174 indicates fuel trim cylinder balance malfunction. This means that your cylinder-to-cylinder air to fuel ratio is not balanced properly. Usually caused by a faulty heated oxygen sensor located on the exhaust. It will not harm your vehicle but it will lower your fuel mileage and the engine light will remain on until the issue is fixed, which will fail an emissions test for some states.

For some reason, after doing the scan, then erasing all the codes before unplugging, everything is working normal.

Well that is odd, normally i would expect that the pcm would be toast, but if it is working just test drive and if there is no problem your on a winner, just keep us informed as to how it goes.

No, not always. The computer may only show the 1174 but it will actually be the oxygen sensor causing the code and teh computer just doesn't recognize that the o2 sensor is what is really the culprit. The OBDII system is a great way to start troubleshooting but if you aren't careful you can still end up spending $$ on parts that are not actually at fault.

On my way to work this morning, the car started idling weird and the check engine light came on, so I pulled over and it died. I let it sit for about 10 min and started it. I was able to make it to work but while I was driving, the car was not shifting properly. The rpm's were staying at 2.5. It is an automatic. About a month ago I replaced the fuel filter and had the throttle body cleaned. Can you please give me an idea?

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Hi everyone,

I went out this morning to start my Cobalt and the battery was gone. I called AAA who came out and replaced my battery. I thought I was good to go after this. Once I started my car, I noticed that the temperature indicator wasn't working and once I started to drive, I noticed that the speedometer isn't working and the car won't shift past first gear. AAA tried to jump start my car before they replaced the battery, and I'm thinking that a fuse might've been blown out whenever they tried to do so, which may be causing the problems with the car not shifting and the speedometer/temp indicators not working.

When I called AAA and told them about this, they sent someone out to my house who looked at the car and basically told me that I was full of it to think that a battery switch could be causing all of these problems...yet, the car was working fine before the battery was switched out and the car was jump started.

I don't have a method to check the voltage on the fuses right now. Anything in particular I should tell the mechanic to check/look out for?

Can anyone provide some insight as to what might be going on here?

Thanks,
Chad

Hello,

It sounds like fuses got blown when the battery was changed, could be becasue the key was left on when the battery was connected. You will need to do a visual inspection on all fuses, here is a guide that will help you and the fuse location below.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

So i replaced my car’s transmission filter and the pan. Worked fine for a few days but now it will not shift into any gear except drive. But when in drive it will only slightly move forward before stopping and repeating this. No other gear will catch. What is wrong in my transmission?

First, are you certain you properly installed the filter and the small o-ring where the filter fits into the valve body? It sounds like that has come apart and the fluid is not circulating. Thus, it cannot shift into any gear. I assume you checked fluid level and it is full. Remember, the fluid is checked with the engine warm, running and then you can remove the fill plug to make sure the level is at the bottom of the hole.

Im almost positive the o-ring and filter are in place because it worked for 3 days prior. I took an hour and a half drive on a highway doing about 100 km/h when i arrived in the town and dropped speed to 50 km/h the gears would not change. Smoke rose from the engine as it was revving too high. I took a guess and thought it might be the clutch

I was afraid of that. The correct fluid should have been Dexron VI. The newer fluid has different friction modifier additives. Pouring the wrong fluid can ruin the transmission.

I learned that the hard way with a Toyota. Spec called for T-IV and added Dexron III and after transmission failed.

At this point you may want to look into replacing the unit and flushing out the cooler lines to prevent contamination.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

The idea that the speedometer isn't working indicates an issue with the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The sensor's signal is used to determine shift points. Have you replaced the VSS or checked wiring to it?

There are two different possible automatic transmissions used on this vehicle. I am going to provide the directions for replacing the VSS for both. You should be able to identify the transmission that matches yours by the pictures. All attached pictures correlate with the directions.

Thank you! But we ended up replacing the alternator, battery, and TCM. We also connected green wires and blue wires behind the radio that had both been cut. These were random suggestions, not really sure which one fixed it. We think it was from connecting jumper cables on backwards.

Welcome back:

I didn't realize the jumper cables were reversed. Chances are the TCM was damaged. Regardless, I'm glad to hear it's working again.

Let us know if you have questions in the future.
