We have never transported gas in a gas can or anything like that and we do not see any gas leaking down on the driveway

Look around the injectors. If one is wet, an o-ring has shrunk and must be replaced. Also look at the rubber fuel hoses where the steel lines on the body connect to the fuel rail on the engine. If one of those is dry-rotted and leaking, the gas can vaporize before you see wetness on the ground.
