SLXA vs. BMXA?

The SLXA transmission is commonly found in Honda Civics from the early 2000s and is typically manufactured in Japan, the SLXA is made for the USA cars.

The SLXA and BMXA transmissions are not direct interchange units.

Are all SLXA transmissions made in Japan for Japanese cars?

Honda makes a few different versions of their cars depending on the market they are sold in. Their popular cars however may be assembled in different plants and still shipped to the same market. That is how you get a Honda Civic that was put together in Ohio selling on the lot next to one put together in Suzuka. They are mostly the same in appearance and build, but there are differences in hidden areas, like wiring can be slightly different colors or routing, or the assemblies may be build specific. That is the case with the transaxles. The SLXA is a JDM transmission made for the cars assembled in Japan but shipped to the US. The BMXA is the same design but made in the US for the US built Civics. They are not directly interchangeable. They will bolt up but the convertor on the SLXA is commonly smaller and has a different bolt pattern, the internals of the BMXA are also slightly different because the US market cars are built to handle the larger engines and weight of the US cars. The big thing is that you can mix and match the parts to fit them into the other vehicle but it's a mess if you don't use the correct parts.

I have an SLXA transmission that came out of my 2001 Ohio built Civic that has a torque converter that is identical to the BMXA transmission I just installed. Identical in every way, meaning it bolted up identically.

The SLXA that I took out seems to be an identical interchange to the BMXA I rebuilt and installed.

The only major differences were the converter and some of the programming. They were mostly the same transmission and it's likely the ones that made it to the US were spec'd slightly different. Honda doesn't share much of the JDM info outside of the dealerships outside the US. The tags and converters are about the only external things and the converters will interchange.

Were there any SLXA transmissions installed as original OEM equipment in new 2001-2005 Honda Civics in the USA auto plants?

No. However, the Civic wasn't fully built in the US at that time. They imported some as knock downs and simply assembled them here to avoid some of the import fees. Those would have been actually built in Japan but then tagged as built in the US. They basically came in as bare chassis with parts removed but shipped in the same crates. Then they put them together here with some domestic sourced parts. So, it's possible yours is one of those and it just has a US engine, and other parts installed on it. Would have been very easy to ship a dry transmission built there and then they stuck the US spec converter and engine onto it before it got installed. A lot of the imports did things like that, some called out if the vehicle was US or Japanese built, others didn't. A lot like cars built today that are made in Mexico, Canada, China, Korea and other places. Some are sent as parts, others as knock downs. It can get really confusing at times. You don't know if you are supposed to swear at it in English, Spanish or Chinese. LOL

From what I was able access in the service manual and online, it indicates that there were in fact 3 different transmissions installed in these Civic EX sedans.

The way I read this, I could have one of two of these automatics in my Ohio made 01 Civic.

The stick is its own animal, those were all made in Japan. Honda has always used their own gearboxes up until 2013 when they installed some ZF boxes in some vehicles (which ended up being recalled for multiple failures). Honda learned earlier than many imports that to haul "larger" Americans they needed stronger drivetrains, many of the engines used in the US are not available in the Japanese versions of the same models. The US spec transmissions are the same, they were used in Japanese built export cars, not for the Japanese market. They designed them in Japan and then would assemble a bunch for testing. Once approved they would send the design to the US plant. They also built the export cars there because the US plant couldn't keep up with the demand for a while.
