Yes, when the rear end starts to go out the wear in the gears can make it do this. When driving forward do you hear the rear end humming? If so this can be the case. I would remove the rear end cover to check the condition of the gears set. Here is a video to show you how:

Also, I would check the transmission fluid level and condition, see if the fluid smells burnt and is discolored. This can be a sign the reverse clutches are burnt up. This guide can help:
