Okay fine in reverse, first and second. Once up speed can go into third, but cannot start in third. Fluid level fine. What is wrong? Can we drive it as if it is a manual using tech. to shift up in gears without causing engine or transmission problems? We need to drive it thirty five miles to repair shop as towing not available.

Good afternoon.

If you need to drive it to a shop, take your time and do not go over forty mph. Yes, you can manually shift it until you arrive.

Should we use all the gears? And what is your guess as to what is going on, if we end up being able to use drive?

It could be something in the valve body or it could be an internal failure.

if the check engine light is on, it may lead us to a control issue.

So we drive at forty mph or less, only indicator light is check oil, which we knew change is due.

Okay, if the check engine light is not on, then it is a mechanical issue in the transmission.

That sounds backward. so if the check engine light is on, it is not the transmission, rather something else.

Also, when they do the diagnostic will it actually determine mechanical or electrical?

No, did not say that. if the light is on, it could be an electronic issue with a sensor, wiring or module. it could also be mechanical if the code is for the torque converter which is internal.

Yes, when the diagnostic is done they can tell if it is mechanical or electrical. they will need to do testing such as pressure tests to see if the correct pressures are working inside the transmission.
