Most of the time it means that you have an engine code. You can visit one of your local parts houses and they will check the codes for free. On newer vehicles, it often just means that the oil needs to be changed.

Just to add to the previous answer, the check engine light means there is a fault in the fuel control system. When there is a fault, the light will come on and set a code. When it is retrieved, we can narrow the area of failure for you.
