Serpentine belt tensioner

Can I have the VIN number of the car? There is a difference in the motors built here in the USA and Japan.

The tension for the belt is adjusted at the alternator itself.

Roy, there is no adjuster at the alternator. There is a tensioner mounted on the timing cover near the back. It effectively "traps" the serpentine belt. I have been able to release the tension and pull the alternator, but cant remove the belt without getting the tensioner off. It has part number 25281-2E300 stamped on it. Here are pics. I assume I need to get the torx bolt loose in the middle but not sure and don't want to mess it up.

Okay, yes, they are torx. It looks like a 35 or 40 torx.

You can go to a parts store and get a cheap set of the sockets. They run around 15 bucks and have about 8 different size sockets for removing that bolt.

Roy, it is a T-50 but no joy in getting loose. Socket wrench, air ratchet, and even a breaker bar have failed. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated. I may just proceed and see if I can get the timing cover off with this baby still attached.

I must be missing something. It can't be this hard to get a serpentine belt off.

If you are releasing the belt, the picture you sent me of your system shows a wrench on the tensioner. By moving that wrench, that will release the tension on the belt for removing it.

The 50 torx bolt is for removing the tensioner assembly, not releasing the belt.

As far as releasing the bolt, it is torqued to around 100 pounds and does need to be removed for your procedure.

My set up looks the same as the picture. However there is only about an inch of clearance to fit a tool so a socket would not be accessible. Is the pictured wrench available for purchase?

Yes, most tool manufacturers make those wrenches. They are long box wrenches and the end is offset.

Snap on, craftsman, Mac and Cornwell all make those wrenches.
