Attached are the procedures for replacing o2 1. Looks like this code is basically saying that the sensor is contaminated. Either the the wiring is corroded or the sensor itself is contaminated with oil or soot.

Looks like the o2 sensor 1 or the upstream ranges from $15.00 to $40.00. The downstream or o2 sensor 2 is about the same.

The labor to do both is about an hour plus they would charge some diagnostic charge. Depending on their door rate in CA I would expect this to be around $150.00 assuming the door rate is around $100.00 per hour.

Yes. If one of these sensors has failed it would turn the check engine light on.

The light has gone off for now. It'd be great if that meant the underlying cause has gone away. My boy friend thinks by gunning the engine and driving fast that he's "cleared" or cleaned out the 02 sensor. What do you think, please? Thank you.

I have not seen an o2 sensor clean itself out but anything is possible. I think more than likely the additional heat may have caused some of the carbon to break loose. So I guess in a way, he may be correct.
