I am showing a p0411 code. I changed the fuse, air filter , secondary air check valve and secondary air injection pump and relay. I erased the code. After driving thirty two miles engine light came back on and it is reading code p0411 again.

Good morning.

Do you have a scan tool that can activate the secondary air system?

There are tests that need to be done to find the failure.

Can you here pump run when first started?

Did you clean the passages in the head?

I only have a regular code reader. yes I cleaned the passages in the head and yes the pump runs when I start it. Like I said I changed the check valve and installed a new air pump and relay, the only thing I havn't tried is changing the hoses

Ok, make sure there is air blowing into the head. remove the hose at te check valve and be sure a good volume of air is coming out.

Did you use new or used parts??

Okay, the code is for voltage issues. I attached a chart for you to view.

It would help a lot if you had a real scan tool that could read all the live data.

Thanks Roy, actually the scan reader I have does read live data. I did go ahead and changed all fuses and relays that pertain to the secondary air system. The only thing I have not changed was the hoses.

I read that before. As I stated before, this is not a component issue it is a voltage issue. you will need to check the voltages at all points to verify voltages and looking for any wiring issues such as damaged or broken connectors and wiring

Hi Roy,
We emailed each other a couple of weeks ago concerning my 2007 chevy trailblazer throwing a PO411 code. You told me that it is not a component issue. You feel it is a voltage issue. Well I took my trailblazer to three different auto mechanics and they all have checked my voltages and wiring etc. To say the least, all three service centers are completely stumped. Everything checks out fine. They all told me they do not know why it is still throwing the P0411 CODE. From all of their experiences they told me that changing the air filter, the secondary air injection check valve, the secondary air pump, the purge valve, and changing all fuses and relays along with all the voltage and connectors checking out, they find it hard to believe I'm still throwing the P0411 code. Since I spent more than $150 I qualified for an emissions waiver for a year. Do you have any more suggestions ? The only other thing I have not changed were the hoses.
Thanks,

Did they check to see if the O2 sensor was changing while they activated the pump??

when the pump is commanded on, all that air goes into the exhaust and it should change the O2 readings until it turns off.

I understand but he missed something or you would not have this issue.

O2 readings need to be checked with the pump commanded on.

I'm just going by with what he was telling me, He did show me how he was commanding the pump on and said when he was doing it everything was reading what it should be reading, I was simply taking his word for it since he is a chevy mechanic and Im a construction worker. But yea I agree with you that they are missing something

I agree. a lot of guys test the pump but do not watch the change in the O2 readings to verify the air.

Ask him if he can re check it for you.

Either the passage is blocked or the volume of the pump is weak.

See if the check valve at the exhaust pipe is good, where the air injection feeds into.Usually a secondary air fault is due to the check valve being bad, allowing ehxaust to travel back into the air system. Can you hear the air pump run when engine is started cold?If not use a test light to see if it is getting power.

I have a P 0410 error code on my vehicle. I need help regarding what to replace; the secondary air injection pump or secondary air injection solenoid valve. Or could it be a relay? Any help in directing me to additional diagnostics, or pat replacement will be appreciated. Thank you.

1st check the related fuses. if have a scan tool use it to turn the air pump on. The air pump and air pump relay are located on the driver side frame rail just bellow the drivers door. If that bi-directional communication is not available on your scan tool you can ground the brown wire on the air pump relay and turn the key on. This should turn the pump on if the relay is working the wiring to it is intact and the pump is in working order.

Now that the air pump is running open the air solenoid. You should hear a difference in the sound of the pump. Another way to verify it is opening is to unhook the fresh air pipe from the air cleaner assembly and feel for a vacuum when the solenoid is commanded on. If the valve is not opening try tapping on it when you command it open. If your scan tool does not support this option you can jump the relay in the under hood fuse box. However before removing the valve verify that you have power and ground when you are commanding the air solenoid open.

You may find that the supply pipe from the air pump to the valve is full of water. If this is the case make sure you blow out the lines before replacing any parts

Repeat SES Light due to a P0410 DTC - Possible O2 Sensor

Models: 2004-2005 Buick Rainier

2004-2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

2004-2005 GMC Envoy

2004 Oldsmobile Bravada

2005 Saab 9-7x

with 4.2L Engine (VIN S - RPO LL8)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Currently, the SI diagnostics do not mention the position 1 O2 sensor as a potential cause of a P0410 DTC.

Recommendation/Instructions:
If the SI diagnostics do not isolate the cause of a P0410 DTC, there is no sign of dirt or water in the AIR pump or relay, and proper AIR check valve operation is noted, replace the position 1 O2 sensor.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Thank you for all the information. I do not know if my scan tool is sophisticated enough for bi-directional communication; however, you gave me enough additional trouble shooting to pursue. I do have additional information for you that may help: when I started the vehicle this morning, there was a higher pitch sound eminating form the engine compartment. The sound was similar to when you put you hand over the end of a vacuum cleaner hose and increase the load on the vacuum motor. I was able to feel the pump running for approximately 20 - 30 seconds then it stopped. Is this functioning correctly or should it have run longer? Thanks, Steve

its about right
check the hose if full of water (drain )
tap on the valve (check if stuck)

I replaced the solenoid check valve, cleared the P0410 code. Vehicle was running fine until today when the check engine light came on again. I scanned and a P0128 code came up which I found out means " coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature". Does this mean the thermostat has to be replaced? The vehicle runs fine, the dashbord temerature gauge reads its normal temperature. Thank you.

Typically its the relay for the secondary air pump that goes bad. I think if I remember right its located near the frame rail on the driverside?

Thank you for your reply. The coolant level is unchanged and there are no leaks. I do not understand how the vehicle could have a bad thermostat if the temperature gauge is reading normal. I only know that a thermostat works or doesn't work. Can newer thermostats work at less than 100% function? Thank you, Steve
