Noise like dragging cans only when moving in reverse gear. All other gears fine, no noises, no trouble getting into gear (even reverse) and no trouble actually reversing, just the noise.

Looking online there is mention of drive shaft and gearbox oil being the culprit. I cannot work out what gearbox oil I need to use?

Once the transmission is making noise fluid wont help it in most cases. It will be automatic transmission fluid or gear oil.

Let me know what happens.

I could see low oil being an issue as it wouldn't lube the bearings inside the box properly but a sound like dragging cans would indicate that damage is already done.

Oil should be 75W80 (GL-4+) for gearboxes with brass/bronze synchronizer teeth Renault - JBX, JCX, JRX, JHX, NDX, TLX units

Hi both,

Thanks for your replies, I've taken it to a local garage today and they have told me that I will need to replace the gearbox.

They had it up on the ramps and went through the gears, as I thought all fine but reverse, however in reverse you could feel something rattling inside the box. They think it might be a tooth or bearing or filings built up and have said essentially one day the box will just seize with me likely stuck in reverse gear.

They've quoted me 5 hours of labour with me finding a gearbox myself or offered to recondition it for £300-400 but have said it may be too far gone.

About what I thought. Usually with a manual box they will be quiet right up until failure, then it's too late... Good luck with it.
