2003 Saturn Vue Saturn Vue won't start, fuel gage shows emp

This all started when my battery died. We charged the battery, I drove it just fine. The next day while driving at about 40-50, the car wouldn't accelerate. The service engine light now came on. A day later, drove it to the store and put $13 of gas into it and proceeded to another store, upon leaving the car wouldn't start. had to tow car home. now car will not start at all and fuel gage shows totally empty.
