Transmission problem
2000 Saturn SL2 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 172xxx miles

my saturn is a 2000 with 172xxx miles on it. ive had it about a month and bought it from a private owner. it has been running okay, a few funny noises but nothing to major although the SES light has been consistantly on. all of a sudden the other day it wouldnt accelerate past 15-20mph. it sounds horrible when you do try to accelerate, very loud growling like sound. it may have been leaking trans fluid but i dont know if i should try and put more in or what because there is no way to check the level of the trans fluid. i cant get it to accelerate beyond 15mph. what can i do??

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

The problem turned out to be that the catalytic converter broke off and went into the resignator. The mechanic said that since our car has so many miles we should just replace the resignator instead of both the catalytic converter and resignator... The proceeded with the work and found that they just had to empty the resignator of all the debris instead of replacing it. Is that okay??
