1988 Saturn SL2 Shifting

U must mean u have a 1998 satur they didn't make Saturn in 1988.when u step on the brake can u hear the bitsi solindo click at the base of the shifter?do u have a multimeter?let me know.

Correct it is 98. Had a typo. There is no click. You need to let the car run for awhile and pump the brake for it to engage; there will be an audible click. When the car is warmed up it doesn't take as long to engage.

I have both power windows and a multimeter

Perfect u will need to remove ur power window switch at the rear of the switch there is two conceled tangs that need to be pushed in so u can pop the switch up.the tangs are behind the edge of the switch behind the mirror button out of sight.if u use two pocket screwdrivers that works the best at the same time pushing on the tabs.once the switch is out then look down into the console u will see the bitsi solindo attached to the shifter.take ur ohms metter on low scale and make sure the black wire to solindo has a constant ground going to it.and the other wire gets power to it when u step on the brake.do this when u can't get it out of park.let me know what u find.

Question: Is the solenoid affected by temperature? I ran the floor heater and it took about 2 minutes to warm the car sufficiently that when I tried to shift out of park I could. It had the audible click.

I removed the parts but am unsure how to reach /identify the solenoid.

Can you provide a description and /or a pic not a schematic.
I could see the cables and release areas under the cupholders.
How do I remove the entire center console housing if I need to? Or should I?

i gave u the wire diagram so u could follow along with the tests and wire colors.i would not remove the console untill ur sure the problem is ethier the bitsi solindo or the shifter itself being all gummed up.i could not find a pic or diagram of the solindo.its black cyclinder shaped with steel rods comming off of it.and has a connector on the side of it with two wires going to it.the only thing that looks like that in the whole car.i have never seen one effected by temp is possible but i have never one that was thats why i said test it when it wasnt working and if the circuit is working like i said and its not clicking and functioning like it should then u have a bad solido.i was just trying to rule out the other possibiltys like wiring brake switch shifter assembley all that stuff.that solindo at the dealer is like 64 plus tax a expensive guess.so take another look for ur meter and let me know what u find.
