2000 Saturn SL1 Re: Replacement of an engine

I have a 1997 Saturn SW and a 2000 Saturn SL. The 2000 SL is a really reliable car for the most part, but it had an oil leak that we weren't aware of and it was really low and the engine blew. So we need a new engine for it. We were wondering if instead of buying a new or rebuilt engine if we could just have the engine from the 1997 SW put in the 2000 SL? I know both cars are from the second generation of the Saturn S-series and they are both 1.9L 4 Cyl. I just don't know if there are any other factors involved. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, I have to say we only recommend direct fit parts. The reason is because the manufacturers change things so quickly from year to year.

Chances are it would work; however, there could be differences that lead to problems such as sensor ports that are not where they need to be, different size threads for the needed sensors, the injection will most likely need changed for the computer to recognize it... Sometimes it isn't worth the effort.

Have you tried finding one in a salvage yard?
