2001 Saturn SC1 engine cuts in and out

I have had my car at two garages, paid for new cat converter, battery and batterycables- the last mechanic gave up. I was told the compression is off in all chambers. When the car has run for approx an hour it starts to supper like its not getting gas and dies. IF you sit for 30 mins it will start again but each time the driving distance is reduced. Also the fuel pump is ok, any ideas what I can try changing out?
I love my little car and hate to giveup on it.

next time it dies take two spark plug wires off the coils that are right next to each other have someone crank it over while u watch for a spark jumping from post to post.let me know if u loose spark when it doesnt start.sounds like a bad crank shaft sensor.
