Leak from caliper while replacing pads

While replacing our rear brake pads, we took the rear caliper off and brake fluid started leaking out from the middle of the caliper. First question: why? We couldn't figure out any way to do it without taking the caliper apart, so we just changed the pads as quickly as we could and replaced the fluid. How should we have done it? Now, we have to floor and pump the brakes to get any pressure. Will bleeding the lines fix that? If so, how do we do it?

Thanks!

If the caliper was leaking off the car it is still leaking now...replace both of them! Then you will need to bleed the rears!
