I had the same problem last year (2000 Saturn LS2). If you put the key in the ignition, and use the palm of your hand to hit the key (as if the key were a nail and your hand was the hammer), it should cause it to release. After I called AAA, the service guy showed me how to do this. I did have to get a new ignition chamber, apparently it was wearing inside. Labor & parts cost about $350 to have it fixed at the dealership.
