Engine Cooling problem
2003 Saturn Ion Automatic 65000 miles

What would be a reason that the fan motor would stop working therefore allowing the engine to overheat. i had noticed when the car ran hot that the fan was not turning. The next day I checked the wiring connection (unplugged and used test light) and was getting power to the motor. When I plugged it back up the fan started. If the heat sensor is bad would it stop the motor for some reason?

Hello, if you have good voltage and ground at the fan and no fan action, I suspect the fan motor. The coolant temp sensor could cause a fan issue, but, there would be other issues as well. The fan should run when you turn on the ac.

I have the same problem with fan motor not running when it should at times! 99% of the time it acts up is when its good and warm out side or its hot out side.Now heres what I found out so far! Its not the fan motor. Its in the connector one end or the other is my bet.Because it you open the hood and move around the wire connector the fan motor will start running. Now there is a small chance that is a wire that has a bad spot in it. I don't think its the wire.The problem is that the connector is under the fan motor it self and I can not really see it, I have to feel for it! I have a plan to just remove the fan motor and check out the connector and all the wires too! I have notice that the shielding that's on the wires to help protect them is falling apart from heat over a long time. This is normal with most older cars.Now I am not talking about the insulation of the wires it self. I am talking about the black spilt wire conduit. That's what its called. Mine is so bad if you look at it too hard it will crumble and fall off! Like I said before, my money is on where the two ends of the connector is going to be what's wrong. Rubber and plastic gets softer as it gets warm/ hot! Then for some reason the fan is not working till you move it around just enough till the next time it acts up again. Could be a day or two, or a week, or a month or two. You just don't know when its going to act up!! I am thinking if its the connector, I will see what a new one cost if you can get one or just bypass it and just straight wire it. It could be your moving the terminal pins on the fan motor itself and making the motor work.All the ones I have seen Inop like that are a bad fan motor.But anything is possible.Also the wires to the fan motor aren't available separately.
