reverse problems

I just need a little help on what possibilities this could be. I have a 1988 saab 5 speed manual and when ever i put the car in reverse and start to back up it pops itself out of reverse... if i try and hold it in reverse it will fight me to get out of reverse.. what could this be and is it expensive to fix? thank you anyone for your help...
