99 Saab 9-3 rear brake problem

I have a '99 Saab 93 with 78,000 miles on it. I recently found out the rear brakes are in horrible shape; they are metal-to-metal and so rusted that they are crumbling. I had no idea they were so bad because I never heard any telling noises. My question is how many miles ago should I have replaced them? If they are this bad now, should they have been red flagged during my 60,000 mile check?

The rear brakes on the NG900 and hatchback 9-3 are high wear items, especially if subjected to road salt and slush. Our '96 900 just had its THIRD rear brake caliper/rotor/pad replacement in 160K miles.

If it's already metal to metal, then rear brake function is pretty much minimal right now. If you're lucky, replacing pad/rotor should be enough. Ours needed caliper replacement too because they had seized due to the salt used in the upper midwest.
