2000 Saab 9-3 repair Question Automatic 87700 miles

While driving thick white smoke was coming from the exhaust, accompanied by a burning smell. When i checked the oil, it was brown and thick. Another factor that may or may not have effected the performance of the car; it's been about 10 degrees where i live, and that is the high. I am wonder possibly what the problem could be and how to fix it.

i would check your anti-freeze level,but it sounds as if your radiater fluid has frozen due to inappropriate mixture for your area,as with those temps.and chances are that it has caused your head,intake or engine block to crack,from freezing.as far as fixing it you will need to find out what broke and whether it would be cheaper with labor and parts to replace the bad parts or to get a whole engine swap,but it sounds to me like a very severe job..i am in the colder parts also and have seen this many times,you need to get an anti-freeze (coolant) tester for under $20 and make sure all your vehicles can withstand the lower temps down to like -30 degrees below zero farenheight
