1999 Saab 9-3 repair Question 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 96000 miles

About 2 weeks ago I noticed the AC seemed to be running, but was not circulating out the upper vents. There seemed to be cold air on the floor, but not much. I tried re-routing the air by selecting defrost, then air on floor, then air out the dash - didn't seem to help. I was due for an oil change and made an appointment for two days later. The next day the air flow was working normally.
The SAAB dealer looked at it however, and reported that the air box needs replacing (about a $250 unit) but the bad news was that 14 hours of labor was involved to remove the dash to replace this unit.
Now a week later the air flow continues to operate normally. I don't want to put that kind of money in the car and I want AC. Do I need to get rid of it?

Honestly, the air flow direction is run by vacuum from the engine. It could be the air box that they mentioned, or it could be something as simple as a vacuum leak. CHeck undrer the dash for vacuum hoses that may have come disconnected or damaged. With the engine running, you may be able to hear a hissing sound from a leak, so that may help too. Keep in mind, the vacuum supply comes from the engine, so don't be afraid to open the hood and check there too.

As far as the box, it is a difficult job.
