Rubbing and scraping sound coming from the driver's side?

It sounds like either the brake pads are worn on that side or there is a problem with a wheel bearing.



Do me a favor. Gently allow your foot to place a small amount of pressure on the brake pedal when you pull out. See if the sound changes.

Also, let me know if you notice any humming sounds from that side when driving. If you do, pay attention if that changes pitch or volume when turning.

Let me know. Also, let me know if you are comfortable checking the brake pads. Here is a link that explains in general how they are replaced. I'm adding this because it shows the difference between a new brake pad and one that is worn.

Also, if you look at the picture below, it shows the location of the brake pads in the brake caliper. If you remove the wheel, you will be able to see them. I have arrows pointing to the pad remaining.

I had my front brake pads replaced before Christmas 2023 so they’re new.

I did try the slight brake pressure when taking off and the scrape doesn’t appear to happen. If it is, I don’t hear it as clearly as before.

I’m currently driving down the highway at 74mph and I hear a sound, but I can’t think of anything to describe it. I took a video to help. With that sound in the video there’s a vibration too. It gets a tad more prominent when I increase speed. I’m at 40mph, I hear the sound, but the vibration isn’t as intense. It’s not a smooth ride at all.

I am a girl who doesn’t know much about cars so if the wheel bearing could be the problem, then I will trial and error it. lol

In the video, it sounds like it could be a bearing issue. Does that sound change when you make turns? Also, when you get out after driving, see if there is excessive heat coming from any of the wheels. The idea you get a vibration is making me think a brake is hanging up and overheating the rotor. Also, in most cases, if applying the brake changes the sound, it is more times than not brake related.

Sorry, I'm trying to narrow things down. LOL BTW, some of the best mechanics I know are women. LOL You may be one of them.

Hey Joe! I’m about to order the part and I want to make sure I have the right thing! I’m ordering from RockAuto. I think I included a picture of the part information. It’s the bearing and the hub kit that comes with hub, bearing, retaining ring and axle nut. Was there anything else that needed to go with that?

Have you confirmed that this is the issue and the side that is causing the noise? If so, what you showed me may be correct, but I can't confirm it without the engine size. Does your vehicle have a 2.0L or the 1.6L turbo?

Next, save this code (255759021228564225) when you order from rockauto, place that code in the section that asks how you heard about them, and it will take 5% off the part. Not much, but at least it's something. LOL

Please confirm the engine size.

It’s the 1.6L Turbo.

The one you need is different. The OEM part number is 51750C1000. This is not a press in bearing as pictured above.

Pic 1 below is the OEM part. Pics 2 and 3 are from Rockauto and I believe that is what you need. Note pic 3 shows the OEM part number as the interchange number.

Okay, I’ve got an update for you! My wheel bearings are in good shape still. My brother took off my tire and checked and they’re good, no play. That initial scrape he said may be coming from my dust shield bc it appears to be on upside down. He also said that my brakes are squeaking some and it with that it looks as though the rotors weren’t cleaned off when they were replaced. He’s going to change those again and clean off the rotors this time.

There was that rubbing sound! It happened!! Still not entirely sure where that’s coming from entirely though. I’m uploading some photos of the area around the wheel.

Two things. First, the axle nut usually sits further back on the threaded part of the axle. Make sure everything is together properly with the axle.

Next, the rubber brake hose looks stretched. It may be routed incorrectly. In the one pic, it looks like it is right next to the axle shaft. Check that as well.
