Interior problem
2000 Rover 75 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

After not driving the car for 5 months, I found that the steering lock wasn’t on when I got in, and I could hardly get the key into ignition - but finally managed after some serious jiggling around. I am able to drive the car but I wonder if the steering lock somehow broke whilst parked up for 5 months, and if it’s related to the current ongoing problem pushing the key in.....

Whilst I can live without the steering lock, having to wiggle and push the key every time I use the car is becoming a pain and I’m worried I may be doing more damage with all the wiggling.

Any help/thought? Can it be easiliy fixed?

the rover model's alway's had problems with the lock barrel .. you are better off getting a new barrel fitted now before it collapses altogether and you cannot get the key to turn and have to drill the old lock out to replace !!

Hi Dave, thanks for the response. Is there any cheaper way of fixing this? I can see that the key doesn`t go in easily due to a small `spring loaded` metal part that hinders it`s entry, but can be pushed back by a screwdriver - or by jiggling the key around as I`m doing. I`m hoping not to spend too much as I want to sell the car in a couple of months.

Hoep you can help

The only way to repair this is to replace the barrel ... you could try your local recycle/scrap yards for a barrel with a key .. bear in mind it will totally collapse at some stage and then it will need drilling out and replacing with a new/used one ... also bear in mind the new key will need programming the cars computer ..
