Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Rover 25 Front Wheel Drive Manual 85000 miles

Car stopped dead in middle of road while driving at 25mph had just gone over a hump. The gear stick wouldnt go in to another gear and we couldn't push the car to the side of the road as it was like trying to push a brick wall down. The car was able to be pushed backwards so we got it to a safe place on the side of the road. What caused this sudden stop we were lucky we had only just moved out of mainstream traffic onto a side road. We have had the car a couple of months. We were shown a receipt for a new clutch when we bought it (how naive were we) but we were told there was a problem with the cam belt. What could have caused this stopping and is it repairable.

the cambelt snapping would not cause the cars wheels to be locked up .. sounds like a gearbox or engine inner workings fault !
