Rough idle, chugging

My vehicle started being rough while idling, I took it to a mechanic that is very reputable and highly recommend. The oil levels were low as somewhat usual. Not even to 3,000 miles yet.
He called GM and they told him it was the variable timing solenoid, but he also said they changed the oil and found metal shavings in the oil and is afraid of how bad this could really be.

All oil has metal in it the question is, how much did he find. also I would do a compression test to see if the engine is okay. Here is a guide to help us get started:
