reverse lighting wires

Good morning,

If you are trying to install a back up camera, you need to run the wires to the camera at the back of the car.

Do you mean hooking them to speaker wires?

No, I just thought I could open the side panel where the speaker is and find the reverse lighting wires (red for power and white for ground or black).

I am concerned. You can hook up to your back up light wire but you may overload the circuit. It was not designed to run a camera, just the light. The increased current load may pop the fuse. Whatever you do, do not install a larger fuse.

You will need to wire in a relay to make it work. On the newer cars, the camera works off the body control module so this is not an issue.

Just wanted you to know the possible issues.

The backup camera needs power to function and needs to trigger when putting the car in reverse. Now, when the car is in park or drive, the reverse light is off and so will be the camera?
What are your suggestions to power up the camera. You stated a relay. How does that work and is it difficult to set-up.

I know the camera is only powered in reverse. It is the circuit load. It is the load that concerns me. The relay would reduce the current to next to nothing and not overload the circuit.

I would wire a relay. You need a 4 prong relay. The terminals are 30, 87, 86 and 85.

You take the wire for the back up lights and put it to pin 86. Splice into the wire to the back up lights.

Pin 85 to ground.

Pin 30 is a battery voltage wire from the fuse block.

Pin 87 is the wire to the camera.

You can get a relay at any parts store.
