Welcome to 2CarPros.

Does the engine crank and not start? Was anything done prior to this issue? For example, someone jumped started the car and reversed the cables?

Did you try ignition on for 10 minutes to see if the anti theft light turns off?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-reset-a-security-system

The BCM can be causing the issue as well as the theft control module. To eliminate the theft module from causing the BCM problem disconnect the Low Speed LAN coming from the Theft Module at the C3 connector PIN 10 and recheck BCM communication. Visa-versa for the theft module to see if it's the BCM shorting the theft module.

Let me know what is happening.

Take care,
Joe

your passlock system (theft deterrent system) is triggered.
Try to reset it:

-Turn key like you're gonna start the car
-let key back in the run position until the security light stops flashing (about 10 minutes).
-when security light turns off, turn key to OFF for five seconds
-turn key like you're gonna start the car again and repeat the same procedure for another two times (3 relearns total, about 30 minutes)

On the last relearn turn key to OFF for five seconds like you're supposed to, then on the next attempt to start the car the system will 'relearn' the passcode/proper resistance, and your car should start.

If it doesn't work, you'll need to have your car checked at a dealer; you may have a defective passlock sensor, bad connection at the BCM, bad ignition lock cylinder/switch.

Also, I'm not sure, but the owner manual may have the relearn procedure in it. You may want to check.

Hope this helps

How do you reset the theft system? Somehow the system was triggered and I can't start the car now. I tried turning switch on and letting it set for 15-20 minutes and this did not work.

the official GM passlock relearn procedure is as follow:

1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
2. Observe the SECURITY light, after approximately 10 minutes the light will turn OFF.
3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Turn key to START; sometime your car will start after only one relearn. If so ,you're done. If not, repeat steps 1 to 3 two more times (for a total of 3 relearns). A that point, the vehicle will be ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to START.

Important
The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

This guide can help as well

Is your security light blinking?
Have you tried the GM passlock relearn procedure?

-turn your key to 'start' and let key go back to 'run'
-wait until the security light goes off (about 10 minutes)
-turn key off and wait 5 seconds
-repeat same procedure two more times for a total of 3 relearns.

On the third time, after you turn your key off for 5 seconds and turn it back to 'on', your system relearn the code and your car should start.

If it doesn't work, you may need to get a new passlock sensor, or possibly a new ignition switch/lock cylinder. Take it to a dealer and tell them about your problem. This no start condition due to the passlock system is very common. I just want to let you know in case the dealer tells you he never heard of it.

The issue is periods where it wont start, I turn the key dah lights all light then when turned to start nothing happens. I take out the key reinsert several times. The SECURITY light comes on periodically for no apperent reason. I wondering if ther is a link between the two or maybe my problem is in the IGNITION?

Your problem is probably your theft deterrent system. This is a very common problem on chevy cars (and others for that matter). Here are some solutions I gave someone else on this site with the same problem:
* Go to a dealer and get charged a ridiculous amount of money for a diagnosis and a fix that may or may not work.
* Try the GM reset procedure for passlock:
• Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
• Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start.
• Observe the security telltale; after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
• Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
• Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the car may start after only one time though); the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
Important: The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
* Bypass the system (check online for infos)
* Attempt to fix it your self, in which case you'll have to determine what's wrong: passlock sensor, ignition cylinder, BCM, bad connection, etc

Relearn procedure below.

Roy

PROGRAMMING THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS

PROGRAMMING REPLACEMENT PASSLOCK SENSOR, BCM, OR PCM

IMPORTANT: The body control module (BCM) must be programmed with the proper RPO configurations before performing learn procedures. Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration. See: Body Control Module > Programming and Relearning > Body Control Module (BCM) - Programming/RPO Configuration

IMPORTANT: If replacing the BCM with a GM Service Parts Operations (SPO) replacement part, the module will learn Passlock sensor data code immediately. The existing PCM however, must learn the new fuel continue password when the BCM is replaced.

IMPORTANT: If replacing a PCM with a GM Service Parts Operations (SPO) replacement part, after programming, these modules will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received, and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. A PCM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn the current vehicle's password.

CONDITIONS
Use this procedure after replacing any of the following:
- Passlock Sensor
- BCM
- PCM

LEARN PROCEDURES
There are two available methods to perform the programming procedure:
- A 10 minutes procedure which requires a Tech 2 and a techline terminal.
- A 30 minutes procedure which does not require the use of any tools.

10 MINUTE LEARN PROCEDURE

TOOLS REQUIRED
- Tech 2
- Techline terminal with current SPS (Service Programming System) software

1. Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle.

2. Select "Request Information" under "Service Programming".

3. Disconnect the Tech 2 from the vehicle and connect it to a techline terminal.

4. On the techline terminal, select "Theft Module Re-Learn" under "Service Programming".

5. Disconnect the Tech 2 from the techline terminal and connect it to the vehicle.

6. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

7. Select "VTD Re-Learn" under "Service Programming".

8. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).

9. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).

10. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.

11. Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the password).

12. With the Tech 2 (scan tool), clear any DTCs.

30 MINUTE LEARN PROCEDURE

TOOLS REQUIRED
None

1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).

3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.

4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.

5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).

IMPORTANT: The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

6. Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password).

7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed (history DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles).

Ok where do I start about a month ago we had AAA replace a dead battery, shortly following that the security light would come on randomly, then the trunk would not open, had to use a key manually. Then the doors would not open had to use key manually. Now car dosn't start, lights come on on dash, no clicking. I put in acc or on mode and now message center says service traction system yikes now what. remote will not function to lock or unlock doors now. Don't want to replace starter if it is not that, so many post indicate security issues with these cars but dealers can't seem to fix after hundreds of dollars on parts and service which does not resolve issue. And being a female I'm sure they would have me buy a new vehicle, (well after parts and service that would be like buying a new vehicle).

First thing you need to do is see what code's you have in your body control module then go from there. Most common thing to go wrong is the pas lock sensor's.It's not the easiest thing for a do it your selfer to fix.Because you need a advanced scan tool that can read body control module code's and live data from the body control module to see what the pass lock reading's are when the car isn't starting.

My other question how long before passlock senser stops reading again? I be taking my car to the shop friday.

Also my alarm system doent look like its been working as well. I tryed some of the steps in the onwers manual and just learn that alarm system not working like it should. Does bad passlock senser have something to do with that?

There is no telling when the next time the car doesn't start that is going to be very random till you get it fixed. You hadn't mentioned your alarm problem's before if the alarm system is causing a false tamper then that could cause a no start and have nothing to do with a bad pass lock issue. You will just have to take it in to which is the case or you could have two problem's the pass lock issue and a alarm issue.Let me know what they find.

Yea i didnt see any problem with alarm system intell last night, i was reading the onwers manual, and it talked about locking doors. it said when you use power lock swith, before doors are cloesed the light on radio should be on entell you closed the doors and it will start slowing flashing when close the doors. When i lock the doors with power door swich, the light on the radio is still flashing and when i close the doors and there locked it still flashing, nonthing changes.

Is there any way to disaram the alarm system, so this problem will stop intell i get it to the shop?

Here's the problem the newer gm car's use a body control module to run the lock's key less entry alarm mileage light's etc if you shut that down you loose everything. So you need to just hope for the best untill you get it checked out.

It is simple, when I turn off the vehicle, I take out the key and before I can exit the vehicle the headlight flicker rapidly. If I engage the door locks and shut the doors it will do one of two things 1) flicker once or twice and stop. or 2) continue flickering rapidly, occasionally stopping and restarting every few seconds until I replace the ignition key and turn to "on". Also, upon starting the vehicle each time the drivers door lock will disengage, while already disengaged, over and over for about fifteen to thirty seconds. It is acting as if the car alarm is activating but the pass-lock does not engage so starting the car is not a problem but after a few seconds of motion and while driving the engine will simply turn off. how do I reset the security/alarm/pass-lock for this vehicle?

That does not sound like the pass-lock system. It sounds like a faulty body control module or steering column wiring harness fault.
Pass-lock does not connect to the headlights, it uses the parking lights,
Pass-lock does not operate the door locks, those are controlled through the BCM and the remote keyless entry system.
Lastly pass-lock shuts of power to the starter not the fuel system.
It can cause a lot of problems but the ones you are having do not point to it.

So I just bought the car and now when I go to start it, the battery and security lights flash. All of the interior lights come on along with the radio. When it happened, I was at a restaurant that, luckily, a friend of mine worked at. She helped me jump my car but nothing happened. So frustrating! I had it towed to my apartment because I didn't and still don't have the money to fix it. I keep hearing/reading it's a security flaw. How can my boyfriend fix this problem? I tried putting the key in the on position until the security light stopped flashing but it never did. I've read several different solutions involving the bcm but I wanna hear it from a pro before we do anything. Please help! Oh, by the way, when I called a Chevy dealership to explain the problem, she kept telling me it couldn't possibly be the security flaw I've been reading about. That it's either the starter or battery. Pshaaa!

try this. trun the key to start and let it come back to the on position. the security light will be on. leave it there till the security light goes out. it could take up to 10 minutes. do this 3 times. after the third time, it should start. if not then there is another issue.

The security light never went off. I did it twice and only twice because the freaking battery died in the process! I'm almost resigned to have it towed to the dealership for the diagnostic alone. My friend Todd, who's a mechanic, told me to have it jumped and hit the starter with some kind of bar to see if it's sticking. I feel like this is the craziest thing I've heard thus far. Eh... I hate this car. More than you could ever know. I think you might need to make a trip to Denver.

Every few days-week I have a problem starting my car. I took my starter in to get checked and as I recall they cleaned the brushes and repaired a bushing. Anyways, that helped the problem for a little bit but now I am having the problem again. The battery and alternater are working fine. What happens is when I try and start my car it won't turn over. All I get is a clicking sound. I have found that if I continue to start my car..after 10 minutes (almost exactly) it will start. Please give me any sugestions you may have as this is getting to be quit a pain when it happens. Thank you for your time.

That sounds like a typical passlock problem. Passlock is your theft deterrent device.
When your car doesn’t start, does ‘security’ flash on the dash? If so that would confirm a passlock problem.
There’re a few things you can do:
* Go to a dealer and get charged a ridiculous amount of money for a diagnosis and a fix that may or may not work.
* Try the GM reset procedure for passlock:
• Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
• Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start.
• Observe the security telltale; after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
• Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
• Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes; the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
Important: The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
* Bypass it (check online for infos)
