Yes, did compare at store. Was helping my husband who was laying under the car, under a tarp in pouring down rain! I did not ask how it finally went in, but turned bolts when I was told to do so. He is a very seasoned do it ourselves mechanic, so I figured whatever the problem, it was serious. One day I may ask how he got it in but for now...my car cranks!

My car is starting only some of the time. It does the same thing in cold and warm conditions. When I turn the key you hear a winding noise, as if the bendix on the starter is spining but not extending to engage the rest of the motor. I took the starter out and had it electrically tested several times at autozone and everything worked fine there. I tore the starter apart and the plastic lever that goes from the solenoid to the shaft of the bendix was broken so I replaced that and reinstalled the starter in the care. It started once or twice but then the same thing happened. The car makes a winding sound like the bendix is spinning and but not extending to grab anything. Is there some other part of the car that sends a signal to the solenoid on the starter that tells it to extend? A relay or something that may be going bad? The car battery seems to be ok and once the car is running it runs fine no stuttering or anything. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My thought would be that the plastic piece broke again and is not extending the arm attached to the bendix.

The solenoid is the one pushing the bendix forward to engage. If the bendix is extending, the problem could be with the oneway clutch of the starter pinion gear.

2007 sonata starter how to replace it?

Remove negative battery cable. Remove cable then connections from starter S terminal. Remove the two bolts holding the starter. Don't let the starter fall out and hit you in the face.

where exactly is the starter located on this 2010 sonata 2.4 engine

i bought a starter need to replace it... any suggestions would be great-but i have to find the thing first.-ive replaced starters in other cars
the car has 148k miles

im not a mechanic, so please tell me if im looking at the front of the engine, where would it be?

It will either be in the front (closer to the driver's side) about oil pan level. It will be bolted in to the transmission bell housing. Check there. If it isn't there, check the rear of the engine, same height. close to the transmission.

On a cold start or if my car sits and idles it sounds like the starter engages. I started my car this morning and it started making a grinding noise so I shut my car off and started it again and it made the grinding noise again. I started it a third time and it was fine. Any idea why it would do This? This has been happening for about 3 weeks now periodically

it may be your starter drive or solenoid is hanging up keeping the starter engaged. have a local pro check it.

When I was starting a car it would start. And after the engine would rotate the starter would make grinding noise as if I was holding the key in starting position(still cranking the engine). After some time the car stopped turning on. When I would crank the engine would catch on to rotate but then it would disengage. So I took the starter off the insides were in horrible conditions. I replaced it. But when I start the car again it still makes the grinding noise as I'd I'm holding the key in the ignition without letting it go after the car started. One thing I noticed though is when I start the key does not go back into on position by itself. I've had other makes and models and after you crank the car as soon as you let go of the key it would go back a quarter of an inch and stop. My car does not do that. So my question is this if the ignition lock is bad and if the key was getting stuck that way could that have been why the starter got bad in the first place and why it still making the sound after I changed it???

it still hanging up so replace the iginiton switch. that is why the starter is messed up Or you have a bad solenoid on the starter.

I'm going to a dealer for a new ignition switch on Monday because local stores don't have it in stock. But the solenoid can't be bad on this starter because I just got a new one few days back. By the way after I replaced the starter and tried to start the car it would...but in the position where only dashboard lights should come on. So I guess the previous starter went bad because o this. Anyways I'm replacing the ignition switch and selling a the car as soon as possible. Not worth paying so much money just to have it brake apart before 100k.

Hello Pglukhoy, I am haing the same issue with my Hyundai Sonata. I am yet to take to the dealer. I had this checked with my local mechanic but he is also stumped. Can you please remember and let me know what was causing this issue?
