Replacing clock spring, got the classic "no horn or cruise control, and air bag light on"?

Got the classic "no horn or cruise control, and air bag light on" symptoms that point to a bad clock spring. I've researched the job and bought the part but have some concerns about the danger of the airbag activating while it's upside down on the steering column. I know I need to disconnect the battery and give it time to discharge the entire system. I read that even a little static electricity can trigger it. Am I over-worried, is there a way to ensure it won't go off, or is this job best left to the pros? Side question: If I want to temporarily re-route the horn wiring to a push button on the dash (to pass PA safety inspection) until I can get the clock spring replaced, any idea which wires I'd need to grab under the dash? Hi,

The clock spring should be replaced. You can't jump from the horn connector to the horn directly.

As far as the clock spring, you are better safe than sorry. However, I reviewed the directions, and the only requirement is to disconnect the negative battery cable at a minimum of 20 seconds. I would give it at least 10 minutes.

Thanks, Joe! I've already downloaded lots of info and video on the procedure but thank you for the pics. As I said, my only concern is accidentally deploying that airbag while it's upside down on the steering column. I'll just have to decide whether I feel comfortable enough to attempt it myself.

Once the power is removed, it should be okay to deal with. If you are still concerned, remove the fuse for the air bag system as well.
