When you replace the old clutch and flywheel, do you have to line the new flywheel with anything on the engine? I know you have to line the clutch up with the flywheel.

Thank you for your help, have an Army Day!

Hi, I'm Dan.

The flywheel bolts directly to the crankshaft. On some Toyota engines the flywheel bolts are slightly offset so that the flywheel will only bolt on one way. But short answer is no, you don't have to line up the flywheel to the crank like you do with the clutch and pressure plate. The torque specs for the flywheel bolts is 80 Ft pounds.

Hoo-Ahh Sergeant.

Unless it has some odd type of bolt pattern or an alignment dowel as some externally balanced engines have, it should simply bolt on. Be sure to add some loctite to the bolts if they don't have thread locker on them already. I would check the pilot bushing or bearing though while you have it apart, if it's the original I would change it out. Easier to do it now than have it act up after it's all together. Be sure to put the clutch disc in the correct direction, have seen them put in the wrong way a few times, that can cause problems.

No special tool needed, although a helper is advisable. The flywheel is heavy, once the bolts are removed the flywheel should stay in place, but once it wiggles loose, it can drop fast. Having someone hold the wheel while you remove the last bolt is advisable.

Not many around here that will help, I’ve had to do it all alone but I do have a plan. Been in the Army long enough to have a plan to get the flywheel down with out help, I may pay someone to help me. It’s all jacked up off the ground working on my back.

Just like in the Army working on the old Willys Jeep, 2 1/2 ton Duce and half, 5 ton truck, M60 Tank and I could name more. Working in mud, rain, deep snow with a flashlight in my mouth, and working in 15 below weather and heat up to 125 plus. All I can say it was so much fun I want to do it all over again and again and again I think that’s enough for now.

Well, a trick that could help; take one of the flywheel bolts out, take it to a good hardware store and get a bolt with the same threads but longer. Cut the head off of the longer bolt and round the end over. Screw it into the top most bolt hole in the crankshaft. Now remove the other bolts and the flywheel will hang on that stud while you get positioned to pull it off.

Used it a few times for different things. Also works for things like lining up the transmission or other unwieldy objects.

Good afternoon,

The flywheel is not that heavy at all. You can set it up on the crankshaft and start one bolt to keep it from falling off.

Start them all and tighten them to 40 lbs. Then retorque to the 80-pound spec that was delivered to you.
