Can i replace a five speed transmission YJ 1997 for a Wrangler 1988?

Just to clarify, you want to put a 1997 TJ transmission in a YJ 1988 Jeep?
If this is the case then you will need an adapter to fit from the 4.0L to a 4.2L engine as the transmissions are different. The TJ is an Aisin transmission and the YJ is an AX4, AX5, or AX15. They would work up through 1993 but after that they are going to have to be fit to the vehicle.
