I had a lock cylinder replaced. I was charged $550.00 for the part alone. I found an OEM part online for $100.00, but they told me that they also replaced the housing. I cannot find a price online for the housing and I do not know what it looks like. Why would they need to replace the housing? How much could the housing possibly cost for them to charge me $550.00 for the part? If I could buy the lock cylinder online for $100.00 they could get it much cheaper. I think I was ripped off.

If the ignition cylinder was stuck and wouldn't turn at all that could be why they changed the housing as well. You have to turn the cylinder to certain position to remove the old one to replace it.The price for the part seems high.Without looking for the part myself it's hard to say what they go for. Also shops are free to mark up parts they don't sell them to you for online prices Also they don't shop around for the best prices to save you money.

Thanks so much for your reply. I think they got the lock cylinder from a NAPA parts dealer but they had to go to a Chevy dealer for the housing. I'm still not clear what the housing looks like so I can't find an online price for it. I did find an OEM lock cylinder online for $100 so how much could the housing cost for them to mark up both parts to $550? They did tell me that they will price match if I can prove it.
