Issue when trying to removing transmission bolts

Hi again Sergeant. I am sorry to hear that but I am not surprised that you are still at it. Can't keep a good Army man down.

There are no tricks for these top bolts. It is pretty common that the only real way to get them is to use a 3 foot extension and 1/2 inch impact wrench with a swivel socket on the end of it.

Take a look at the attachments. This is the process from the manual but the last couple pages show what I am talking about.

If you look where I show the red lines. This is the extension and basically you can use the swivel sockets to get a better angle at it and remove the bolts. This bets the heck out of trying to reach up there with a ratchet.

Just make sure you have a floor jack under the trans with a strap around the top of it so it doesn't slip.

Thanks for the help. Do I need to remove the transfer case from the transmission?

It is not necessary as it should come out as an assembly but I always do if I am not working on a lift where I have a transmission jack to lower it all as one.

Basically I just feel better knowing I have one less heavy component above me when laying on the ground. It’s less unstable when removing them separately.

I have the truck upon ramps front and back. I have a transmission jack, but I have to lay on my back to work on it. Will I have to drain the transfer case in order to remove it! Will I have to remove the sway bar and exhaust pipe to get the transmission out? Thanks for the help.

If you have a transmission jack then I would just follow those steps that they layout from the manual that I attached previously. It says that you must remove the exhaust pipe but not the sway bar. Then take the transmission and transfer case out together.

However if you remove them separately you do not need to drain the transfer case as the fluid should not leak even if you fill it upside down.
