I'm Trying to R&R an A/C compressor on a 2004 tauras. I have removed the lines and 4 mounting bolts that are visible. The compressor will not come off are there more than the 4 bolts that run through the front of the dcompressor that hold it on.

So today I cranked up the car and turned on the AC, and noticed it blowing hot with a funny smell. Opened the hood, and the compressor is smoking and the clutch plate is moving and stopping intermittently. Seems like the clutch is going on it?

Now, I know I need to replace the compressor in the near future. But here is the real question, do I need to replace everything else? I can turn the compressor by hand still and the AC still kicks on when it wants to without any problems after it starts correctly.

I have a feeling I have a good chance of just replacing the compressor and getting by with that.

Also, I need to replace the valves (?) where the high and low ports are for the AC. How do I do that?

This is the 24 valve Duratec engine.

You should replace the compressor and the dryer. Once you open the system, moisture will get in the system and contaminate the dryer.

Procedures:

When A/C compressor is inoperative due to internal causes, clean the refrigerant system by flushing or filtering to remove any debris or contaminants and prevent damage to the replacement A/C compressor.
Replacement of the suction accumulator/drier is necessary when the A/C compressor is replaced.
The A/C evaporator core orifice should be replaced whenever the A/C compressor is replaced for lack of performance or when there is debris in the system.

Removal:
1. Discharge A/C system. Refer to System Discharging and Recovery.
2. Remove battery.
3. Drain cooling system.
4. Disconnect lower radiator hose from thermostat housing and position aside. (8575)

6. Remove two lower bolts retaining A/C compressor to A/C compressor brackets.
7. Remove cooling fan motor, fan blade and fan shroud assemblies.
8. Remove retainers and position aside rediator tube assembly (08A111).
9. Disconnect electrical connectors A/C pressure cut-off switch (19D594).
10. Disconnect electrical connector from A/C compressor clutch and position harness out of the way.
11. Remove drive belt from A/C compressor.
12. Remove bolt retaining A/C manifold and tube.
13. Remove two upper bolts retaining A/C compressor to A/C compressor bracket and remove A/C compressor. Cap A/C manifold and tube to prevent moisture and dirt from entering system.

Okay, so the AC compressor kits on Rock Auto come with the compressor, drier, expansion valve (?), and compressor oil. I guess I need to replace the condenser too? If I fill up all new components with oil, and put them in, I should be good to add Freon right?

The oil for the compressor will either need to added or it may come with oil in it.

As far as the Freon system, add two ounces for the condenser, two for the dryer and one for the expansion valve. That means you will add five ounces to the Freon system before adding Freon. After you evacuate the system for forty five minutes, add the oil then the Freon.

I get confused when people talk about "evacuating" the system. At work we have an AC machine that does leak tests and puts in oil/Freon. So, if I were to replace the parts, could I simply drive it there and let the machine do its thing and be set?

What's the easiest way to remove the A/C pump?

Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect negative battery cable. On SHO models only with 3.0L (4 valve) engine, drain coolant, disconnect and remove constant control relay module, disconnect and remove electric cooling fan and shroud. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses and remove radiator.
On all models, disconnect A/C compressor electrical connector at compressor. Remove 2 upper compressor bolts. Loosen idler pulley and remove drive belt. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect oxygen sensor wire connector, if necessary.
Remove bolt securing A/C muffler supporting strap at subframe. Disconnect A/C hose from condenser and accumulator-drier. Plug all openings. Remove 2 lower compressor bolts. Remove compressor, manifold and tube assembly as a unit. To install, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and charge A/C system.
