rear suspension, car is sitting low in the rear?

140,000 MILES • 1.6L • 4 CYL • 2WD • AUTOMATIC

Hi,

When I push down on the rear of the car to bounce it, it bottoms out on the first push. Would this be caused by bad springs or shocks, or both? Anything I should look out for when I get underneath it this weekend. I have some knowledge working on engines but not much when it comes to suspensions so any advice/help/pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hi,

If it is sitting low, the coil springs would be the cause. A shock absorber doesn't hold weight. It simply dampens the bouncing.

I attached a pic below. Inspect the coil springs to see if one is broken. If they aren't, they could be worn and need to be replaced.

Awesome. Thanks for that nugget of knowledge. So, it sits low, bad spring, ride bouncy, bad shock. Sit low and rides like a boat, bad springs and shocks. Love learning new things. Thanks much for the diagram and information, I really appreciate it. I'll get under it this weekend hopefully and will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again.

You are very welcome. Let me know what you find, and I'll help you get it fixed. Note that when checking the coil springs, it can be difficult to see a crack or damage. Take your time.
