How can I check the rear fluid. Have a whining noise that gets louder has I accelerate. Was told it was the hub assembly. Replaced that but noise is still there.

There is no "rear fluid" or rear differential to check in that vehicle because it is a front wheel drive vehicle. Unless it is an all wheel drive. I will say that it could possibly be the other hub assembly. Does the noise change as you go around curves, or accelerate/decelerate? Normally, the faster you go, the louder (and potentially higher pitched) the noise will be.

Yes, when I accelerate it gets louder. I checked all the tires to see if there is play in any of them and there is not any play.

You would not necessarily feel any play in the wheels. There would not be any noticeable play in the tires unless the hub was about to come apart.

Ugh. I was also told that the tires could make the same noise.

To check and see if it is the tires, you can rotate them. Basically, you would be putting the rear wheels on the front, and the front ones on the rear. Then drive the car and see if the noise moved with the tires. If it moved, then it is the tire.

Yeah me too. I already replaced one rear hub assembly this morning and it was not fun. So if it is the hub then I have to order it in the morning because they do not have any in stock. However, if it is the tires there is a lot more money.

Good morning.

You can tell if it is the tires by having them rotated and see if the noise travels to the front. That would confirm a tire issue.

The hub bearings are common issues. Also, the rear fluid is an issue. It must be changed every 50,000 miles or the bearings in the rear will fail. They take special fluid for that change.

Hey Michelle, it has come to my attention that the 3.6L Rendezvous is an All Wheel Drive vehicle. So if you are sure that you have a 3.6L engine, then the rear fluid could be your issue. It uses a specific lube and has two oil pumps in it along with the gears. When the front end spins a bit the rear pumps rotate at different speeds and clamp the clutches on to power the rear axle. Whine can be from the pumps or internal pinion bearing or even the joint at the front of the torque tube. The unit bolts to the body with minimal isolation and noises become much louder. Lube is VersaTrak Fluid GM # 12378514

I will look into how to check the fluid if rotating the tires does not work.
